What Are We Celebrating Today?

I hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas. It's STILL raining here in Georgia. It's too bad the rain wasn't snow, but it's in the 40's here. We didn't really do anything special for Christmas or Christmas dinner. The kids didn't get that much for Christmas, and Pher thinks we (okay, mostly me) view him as a villian. LOL. He didn't like the Darth Vader sweatshirt I got him (I still like it!), so he'll have to exchange that out tomorrow. Angela loved her picachu hat.

I have definitely picked something up in Florida. The coughing is worse and I've had a fever on and off since I got home. I seem to get sick every Christmas for some reason....pick it up from family ususally.

So...what are we celebrating....

1). Boxing Day: The roots of this holiday go back to the Middle Ages . On this day, members of the merchant class would take boxes, fill them with food and fruits, and give them to servants, tradespeople and the less fortunate. In the case of servants, they would work on Christmas Day, so it was only fitting that immediately after Christmas, they would be given a day off to celebrate. Usually celebrated the day after Christmas, some would celebrate the following Monday when Christmas fell on a Friday or Saturday.

2). Candy Cane Day: Yum! I do like candy canes, and they are probably on sale at a lot of stores today also. The candy cane was originally a straight, hard, and all-white candy stick invented by French priests in the early 1400s. The cane shape is traditionally credited to a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany, who, legend has it, in 1670 bent straight sugar sticks into canes to represent a shepherd's staff, and gave them to children at church services. Candy with red stripes first appeared in the early 1900s. So celebrate this holiday by eating a candy cane...I will.

3). National Whiner's Day: In 1986 Rev. Kevin Zaborney designated December 26 as National Whiner’s Day. Zaborney founded the holiday in hopes of encouraging people to be thankful for what they have rather than unhappy about what they don’t have. Suggestions for celebrating National Whiner’s Day include visiting a mall or store to watch people whine as they return or exchange unwanted gifts, inviting friends over for a “Whine and Geeze” party, and holding a whining contest with family and friends.

4). National Thank-you Card Day: This one makes perfect sense, as it's time to write all those notes thanking people for the gifts you received on Christmas. And don't underestimate the power of a thank-you note, especially with the grandparents. I know my kids have a few thank-you notes to write. Start the kids off early writing the thank-yous and you won't have as many problems when they get older.

It's also St. Stephen's Day in the Western Church or on the 27th in the Eastern Church. For more on St. Stephen's Day go HERE.

Have a Happy Hump Day!

Crowned By The King = My Story

As part of the Christian Women Affiliates Review Crew, I was given the opportunity to learn about the Crowned By The King ministry. This is a word of mouth ministry, so there is really no advertising.
From their Website: "Crowned By the King" is a women's ministry that uses a unique, crown necklace to help women creatively share the love of Christ with other women (a friend, family member, or even a stranger). Our goal is for women to know they are loved, cherished, and beautiful Daughters of the King. Psalms 45:11 says..."The King is enthralled by your beauty; honor him for he is your Lord." How the ministry works is really easy. We have simply created a vehicle (the necklace) that carries a powerful message for women. When women wear the "Crowned by the King" necklace it reminds them of their beauty, their value, and their purpose in Christ. You carry this message by wearing and sharing the "Crowned By The King necklace."
I was given 2 Crowned By The King necklaces, and the photo (from the website) does NOT do the necklace justice. It's beautiful.
01-Necklace
Since the one necklace was mine, I put it on when I got it. Well, that didn't last long. I picked up my daughter Angela from school, and she immediately noticed it. I mean, I didn't even get the truck started before she was asking me all about it. Since one of the ways to share this ministry is The Compliment Opportunity - This is the most popular of the Crowned Moments. This is when someone compliments you on your "Crowned By The King" necklace and as a part of the ministry you give them your necklace and share the love of Christ with them. This does happen often, so be ready!! (from the website) . Yes, I gave my necklace to Angela. She's actually been wearing it to school and has had compliments about it.
The other necklace went to one of Angela's best friends, Michaela. A lot of you sorta' know who she is from photos.

I actually decided to give Michaela the other necklace for a couple of reasons. She had admired Ang's necklace for one. She's also been going through a few things and needed reminding that she is special. Angela and I gave her the necklace together...and she really loved it. I gave her the pamphlet that decribes the Crowned By The King ministry and the bookmark. I also did discuss this with her mom ahead of time.
Our teenage girls are under a lot of pressure to be thin, beautiful, and to fit in. With all they see and hear, they sometimes forget that they are special and unique in their own way. Having a teenage daughter, I have been noticing it a lot more lately. Angela and Michaela are about the same height and size and can wear each other's clothes... Both of them are dancers too....so they do get a lot of exercise. Yet, I still hear the 'fat' comments sometimes. I want them to know that no matter what they are loved and special, not only in my sight, but in God's.

What are We Celebrating Today -- 11/27/2012?

I can't believe November is almost over. I guess I should go to MyPoints and cash out some of my points. The problem I have is I just don't know what gc to get. I need to get a gift for Mike for his birthday still...and for Christmas. Does anyone know about TVs? We don't have cable, so I don't need the high, top of the line model. I just need something that I can hook a Blue Ray player to.
So...what are we celebrating today....

1). Pins and Needles Day: The real purpose of Pins and Needles Day is to commemorate the opening of the pro-Labor play Pins and Needles on Broadway on this day in 1937. Over decades of time, people lost track of the original meaning of this day. Today, most people look uponPins and Needles Day, as a nervous and anxious day. Its a day of eager anticipation, as we await an event or for something to happen. One could argue that kids are on pins and needles from now until Christmas, as they nervously wonder if they have been good enough to receive a visit from Santa in a few weeks. I guess take this one as you will....

2). National Day of Listening: This holiday is a day to honor a loved one through listening. It's the least expensive but most meaningful gift you can give this holiday season. You can choose to record a story with anyone you know. Hallmark has some great books that you can record and give to a loved one.

I am hoping as Christmas gets closer, we don't have a lot to celebrate. I was hoping for a food holiday today though. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

I'm exhausted already....I need a nap.

Happy Thanksgiving!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! I hope all of you have a wonderful, safe, and blessed Thanksgiving, full of food, friends and fun.

So what else is being celebrated today.....

1). Go For A Ride Day: As the holiday season begins, life becomes chaotic, and perhaps a bit stressful. Take a breather, and go for a relaxing ride. I don't know how relaxing my ride is going to be, but I'm planning on finding a newpaper today.

2). National Day of Mourning for Indians: From the website: Every year since 1970, United American Indians of New England have organized the National Day of Mourning observance in Plymouth at noon on Thanksgiving Day. Every year, hundreds of Native people and our supporters from all four directions join us. Every year, including this year, Native people from throughout the Americas will speak the truth about our history and about current issues and struggles we are involved in. Now I have read through the site and I'm not sure exactly how true all of the claims really are....I'll let you decide.

Have a Happy Holiday...and try not to eat too much. :)

Book Review: A Thin Film of Lies by Susanne Lakin

A Thin Film of Lies by Susanne Lakin is a Christian thriller and murder mystery.

Description from Amazon:

Anders is a dedicated, no-frills homicide detective who takes her job seriously but has a wry sense of humor. She suffers from the unbearable heat, from unrelenting allergies, but does not suffer fools. As much as she wants to please her superiors, she knows her true boss is—God—and she answers first and foremost to his leading, which sometimes takes her beyond the call of duty, often to the ire of those around her. A middle-aged, divorced, single parent with two teens, Fran hopes someday to find a great man and remarry, but she’s not holding her breath. Right now, she just wants to be a good cop and mother, and use her faith to help those she encounters in her line of work learn there’s someone “up there” who truly cares for them.

Fran's current case throws her into the lives of Mike and Alisa Jepson, a couple whose marriage is disintegrating fast. When leads coming into the precinct point at Mike Jepson as guilty of murder, Fran watches the damage wrought on this couple, yet is unable to ignore the incriminating evidence. When Mike ends up arrested and in jail, Alisa takes comfort in a friend—Dee Dee—who moves in with her.. Mike hires a PI who uncovers clues to who is setting Mike up, but Alisa is caught in a trap before Mike can protect her. Although Fran reaches out to Alisa during her crisis of faith, she is unable to stop events from barreling toward a crash.

I really enjoyed this book, though I figured out who the killer was pretty quick. I wasn't quite sure what the motive was until later in the book. I would LOVE to tell you a lot about the story, but I don't want to give anything away. The book does goes back and forth between Detective Fran and what is going on in her life both personally and professionally, and The Jepsons with their problems. To me, this is the start of what could be a good series starring Detective Fran. I would give the book 4 1/2 stars.

The only problem I had was the formatting of the ebook I received. The font kept changing throughout the book. For a while, every paragraph had a different font, and that was very annoying and distracting. Hopefully this issue has been resolved.

A Thin Film of Lies has nothing objectionable in it, so it would be good for a teen reader.

I received a free copy of this book/Ebook to review, as part of The CWA Review Crew. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I'm disclosing this in accordance with the FTC Regulations.

What are we celebrating today -- 10/29/2012?

I hope the wind dies down here, as we'll lose a tree or two if it keeps up. I also hope the storm isn't too bad for the rest of the east Coast. Flooding isn't fun and I don't wish it on anyone.

So...what are we celebrating...

1). National Cat Day: This one is for you Sassy...and Rocky, and Beau... National Cat Day was founded in 2005 by Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Colleen Paige to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.

2). Visit A Cemetery Day: Estimates suggest that there are over one million cemeteries in North America, and today is the day to visit one. I think I'll skip it, as I don't have any relatives buried down this way. I guess I could go geocaching in a cemetery, as there are a lot of them around.

3). World Psoriasis Day: From the website: World Psoriasis Day is a global event that sets out to raise awareness and give voice to the 125 million people worldwide with psoriasis. During World Psoriasis Day, awareness activities will occur all over the world to help increase understanding, improve access to treatments and build unity among the psoriasis community.

4). National Lung Day: Many of us know smokers and/or people who have suffered and died from lung cancer. Not that all lung issues stem from smoking, but this is the one that is preventable. The American Association for Respiratory Care created Lung Health Day to focus on lung health.

5). Hermit Day: It's a quiet day to spend quietly in seclusion, all by yourself. Oh, I wish I could celebrate this holiday. If you are a Hermit, celebrate your lifestyle today. If you're one of the many, who yearn for a break from your hectic lifestyle, be a Hermit on this day (like that could ever happen...lol).

I hope all of you have a great Monday. I can't believe October is just about over. Oh my! And you should see all the branches that have blown down now....

She is also giving away a copy of Worth The Risk, book 2 in the series from this post. Keep reading and you'll see what question she wants you to answer to win. And feel free to leave questions and comments to Karen in the comment section also.

Summary of Worth the Challenge: Together, they’re magic. Now to capture it in a bottle…
For once in his errant life, Rhett Worth is ready to prove to his older brothers he’s more than good looks and a woman-melting smile. Except he’s screwed up. And it’s about to hit the fan as he prepares to tell them he’s failed to deliver the master perfumer, Michel Durand, to create Worth Luxury’s signature scent.

Then salvation walks through the boardroom door, all wrapped up in a petite, seductive package.
Gabriella Durand is prepared to beg the Worths to give her capricious father another chance. Instead, she finds the devastatingly handsome Rhett Worth offering it to her as if he’d planned it all along. And Gabriella, hungry to emerge from her father’s shadow, jumps at it.

Soon they’re in Maui to hunt for the perfect scent…and find it in the tropical breeze that washes across their entwined bodies. Now the pressure is on to capture that passion in a bottle—before they let love complicate the delicate mix. Before a whiff of betrayal threatens to destroy everything.

From Karen:

Hey everyone!

When I write, the things that inspire me aren’t necessarily consistent. Most of the time photos inspire me. Other times, I have such a visual in my head I don’t want it to be tainted by outside sources.

Us writers are an odd lot sometimes, aren’t we?

As I was writing each book of the Worth It series (Worth the Scandal, Worth the Risk and Worth the Challenge which just came out on the 16th) I had an image of Rhett but it wasn’t necessarily concrete. He appears in the first two books, has that bad boy reputation that’s so delicious to play with.

Yet his face, it didn’t come to me.

Until I was scrolling Pinterest one afternoon and was struck by this photo:
Pinned Image
Source: Pinterest

Hello, Rhett, was the first thought that rang through my head. Then, I had to immediately figure out who he was. I posted this photo on my blog and on my Facebook page, asking for help. And let me tell you, it was fun to watch everyone take guesses, go out on the search, all in the name of finding this handsome devil who’d become my Rhett.

I finally Google searched the image (did you know you can do that? I didn’t until I searched this dude. So cool!) and discovered his name is Stephen Walker, he’s six-foot-one and he’s a model from South Africa.

They make ‘em real sexy in South Africa, don’t they? *winks*

(Here’s a link to his modeling portfolio – it’s worth a look, trust me)

So tell me…what do you think of my Rhett? (and for more of the visuals that inspired the Worth It series, please check out my Worth It Inspiration page at Pinterest!) Let me know if he’s your type in the comments and I’ll choose one lucky winner to win a copy of Worth the Risk, the second book in the series!

Plus, don’t forget to enter the blog tour contest for your chance to win a $50 gift card to Amazon or B&N!

Review: UNREAL Candy #41 Candy Coated Chocolate

I am a buzz agent and one of my new campaigns was UNREAL Candy. I was given a coupon for a free regular size UNREAL Candy item, which I found at my local CVS. The UNREAL candies all have number designations. The item I picked out for us to try was #41 - Candy Coated Chocolates.

#41 looks a lot like M & M's or Hersettes.

The information from the UNREAL website: We've just unjunked America's favorite candy and true to Nicky's dream, we think it tastes better without the corn syrup, the artificial ingredients, and the partially hydrogenated oils. Not to mention less sugar. We even added more cacao, real caramel (not corn syrup dyed to look like caramel), more peanuts, protein, and fiber. All this is the product of the UNREAL™ culture.

Unreal 41TM

Nutrition Facts: Serving Size: 42g Calories 190
Sugar 19 g
Total fat 10 g
Carbs 24 g
Fiber 3 g
Protein 4 g

Percent Daily Values (DV) are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

Ingredients:

Milk Chocolate (chocolate, skim milk, cane sugar, cocoa butter, milk powder, organic blue agave inulin, soy lecithin, vanilla extract), Cane Sugar, Calcium Carbonate, Colored with (beetroot juice, turmeric root extract, purple cabbage juice), Gum Arabic, Vanilla Extract, Carnauba Wax & Beeswax

Contains milk, soy. May contain tree nuts, peanuts, wheat.

I only had a couple of the candies to taste, as the warnings of "May contain..." scare me enough that I don't take any chances. I have enough issues with allergies.

Angela would give the #41 Candy Coated Chocolates 5 stars, as she says they are better than M & M's. I did like them, I can only give them 4 1/2 stars as they have nut and wheat warnings. These also come in a peanut variety, which Angela has no interest in trying. She and I would like to see a dark chocolate variety and maybe a candy crunch too.

The UNREAL Candies can be found at CVS and Kroger. If you visit the website, I'm sure there are other stores that carry UNREAL Candies also. Give them a try....I think you'll like them.

Women Who Shine -- Nominate and Vote

Yahoo! Shine is celebrating extraordinary women across the country and asking for nominations. These women may not be famous, but they are Women who Shine and are special in their own right. The woman may be a teacher, a cancer survivor, a neighbor who voluteers at the local shelter, or a relative that drops everything to help someone in need....the possibilities are endless. Celebrate that special woman and give her the recognition she deserves by nominating them for Women Who Shine or go to http://bit.ly/women-who-shine There are 8 different categories that will hopefully have hundreds of different women nominated. The woman with the most votes can win a $10,000 prize.

My nomination is my mother....Joline Bowdich....and in the Survior category.

My mother is a 2 year ovarian cancer survivor, and the cancer has not stopped her from continuing her volunteer work. I don't even know where to begin, as mom does so much for so many...though she'll say she doesn't do much at all. She helps package Christmas cards for the Lutheran Auxillary, makes World Relief quilts from scrap material, helps stock shelves and buy items for Lutheran Child and Family Services, tutors and mentors a child at an underprivledged school, and works endlessly to promote awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. This is ovarian cancer month, and just recently, she helped place teal ribbons on trees throughout 3 different cities. Most importantly, she loves and takes care of her family. Her page is HERE, and if the link doesn't work: http://shine.yahoo.com/photos/survivor-1344924144-slideshow/joline-bowdich-photo-1348413853.html
Joline Bowdich
I would appreciate you coming out to look and vote. There are lots of derserving women who could use votes in all the different categories.

I was compensated for this blog post while participating in the SocialMoms blogging program. The opinions and ideas expressed here are my own. To read more posts on this topic, click here.

What Are we Celebrating Today --- 9/27/2012?

This just isn't my day. I still itch sooo bad, and I'm not sleeping well either.....and I have sooo much to do. I can't concentrate very well either, not with the meds in my system.
So.....what are we celebrating......
1). Crush A Can Day: I think I'm going to be celebrating this one. I may crush lots and lots of cans today, so I can get rid of some frustration. That's what this holday seems to be for.
2). Google's Birthday: Happy Birthday Google!! If you go to their main page, you'll even see a google cake.
3). Ancestor Appreciation Day: This is the holiday to celebrate your ancestors and appreciate them. Start by researching your family history....maybe you have someone famous related to you.
4). National Thank You Day: Today is the day to go out and say thank-you....the thanks can be for something as small as passing the salt...or the compliment someone pays you. In my case, THANK YOU to all my Gather friends for reading and commenting on my articles and photos, especially the ones where I'm learning to write poetry and the Crowdtap challenges (oh, I have some of those to deal with....).
5). World Tourism Day: World Tourism Day (WTD) 2012 is being held under the theme Tourism & Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development. Official celebrations will take place in Maspalomas, Spain (Sept 27). This year’s theme aims to highlight tourism’s role in a brighter energy future; a future in which the world’s entire population has access to modern, efficient and affordable energy services For more information go to the website.

What Are We Celebrating Today --- Sept 22, 2012?

Have to work today....hopefully, Angela and I will be able to stop and pick up some of the dance shoes she needs. She needs new tap, jazz, and lyrical shoes....we didn't even use lyrical shoes the last couple of years.
so, what are we celebrating......
1). Elephant Appreciation Day: This is the day to show how much you care about elephants.
Elephant Appreciation Day was declared beginning in 1996 by WildHeart® Productions [*] to celebrate the Elephant because...
  • is the largest land mammal of our era,
  • is unique among mammals for its trunk,
  • is the most noble of beasts on earth,
  • is most undeservedly threatened with extinction,
  • has been man's benefactor in numerous ways throughout history,
  • is entertaining and amusing,
  • is gentle and friendly,
  • contributes to ecosystem development and maintenance,

2). Business Women's Day: This is the day to recognize women in business. Hilary A. Bufton Jr. and three Kansas City business women founded the American Business Women's Association(ABWA) on September 22, 1949. The first Business Women's Day was celebrated in 1982. In 1983, a joint Congressional resolution was passed, and signed by President Ronald Reagan proclaiming September 22 as Business Women's Day. President Ronald Reagan also issued Proclamation 5532 on American Business Women's Day, in 1986.
3). International Rabbit Day: This holiday seeks to protect rabbits as pets and in the wild. Animal rights groups and humane societies are active promoters of this special day. Their objectives are to promote healthy, caring environments for rabbits that are raised as pets, and those living in the wild.

4). National White Chocolate Day: This is the day to celebrate that yummy white confection. White chocolate was invented by the Nestlé company in Switzerland. The first white chocolate bar debuted in 1930. Despite its long history, for many years the confection we know as “white chocolate” was not officially chocolate at all. White chocolate does not contain cocoa solids—one of the main ingredients in traditional chocolate. In 2004, ten years after chocolate manufacturers filed the first petition, the FDA finally relaxed its definition of “chocolate” and accepted white chocolate into the family. White chocolate is my husband's absolute favorite. I even get his Easter bunny in white chocolate.
5). Hobbit Day:I like this holiday. September 22nd is the Birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two characters from J.R.R. Tolkein’s popular Middle Earth Cycle books, hence Hobbit Day. Hobbit Day is perhaps the oldest running day celebrated by fans. There is some debate on the date that Hobbit Day should be celebrated on, due to the differences in the Gregorian and Shire calendars. Tolkien once said that the Shire calendar is ahead by about ten days depending on the month. To celebrate this holiday, go barefoot and eat 7 meals today....LOL
6). World Carfree Day: Today is the day to go car free. Every September 22, people from around the world get together in the streets, intersections, and neighbourhood blocks to remind the world that we don't have to accept our car-dominated society. I'd celebrate this one, except I have to go to work and it's way to far away to walk.

7). Ice Cream Cone Day: Yum! I like this one....and the reason it's celebrated today, is September 22, 1903 the ice cream cone was invented. Today, there are a variety of types and flavors of ice cream cones. My favorite happens to be the chocolate covered waffle cone.

Now, I'm sure there are other holidays today....and if you know of one, just post it below.

Book Review: Peaceful Passages by Kim West PhD

Peaceful Passages by Kim West PhD is an amazing book that deals with what one will go through when a loved one is dying.

Peaceful Passage

From the Back Cover

YOUR LOVED ONE IS DYING...YOU'RE OVERWHELMED...
THE COUNTLESS DAY-TO-DAY LOGISTICAL DETAILS...
THE EMOTIONAL UPS AND DOWNS...ALL THE HOSPICE ARRANGEMENTS...
AND ON TOP OF IT ALL, WHO'S TAKING CARE OF YOU?

Taking care of a loved one on their final journey can be one of the richest, most life-affirming experiences you'll ever have. And perhaps the hardest one you'll ever go through. There's far more involved than just hospice details and your loved one's constant physical and emotional needs. There are your needs as well - as your "regular" life obligations collide head-on with this potentially all-encompassing commitment.

Enter Peaceful Passage, a true labor of love from professional counselor Kim West. West was at her mother's side during her last months of life, and chronicled the whole process in order to provide a comprehensive and proven blueprint for others to follow.

In the pages within, you'll find practical guidelines for:
- Determining first steps once you've heard the news
- Charting a course with hospice as your partner
- Dealing with your loved one's emotional roller-coaster
- Navigating demands of marriage, family, children and career
- Handling the daily, ongoing physical challenges and demands
- Confronting common fears and unresolved emotional issues
- Working through inner conflicts around faith and God
- Managing the myriad post-passage details and arrangements
- Finding closure, returning to routine and reflecting on the journey

Peaceful Passage is your essential, all-in-one guide to handling every aspect of this often heart-wrenching and heartwarming journey.

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I received this book to read and review. My mother does have stage 4 ovarian cancer, but she has been successfully fighting it so far. No, I'm not in denial, as the doctor said she is currently in remission. I do know that someday in the future, she will probably die from the cancer. At that time, I will want to use Peaceful Passages as a reference. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of the journey, from finding out your loved one is dying to the final end at home.

At the end of each chapter, there are workbook like pages for one to fill out. I found them extremely interesting and helpful. These pages will help keep things organized during that stressful time. Plus, there were questions in the pages to answer that I didn't really think about until I saw them. In a way, it was a little scary to read, because I don't want to think about some of this stuff (like funeral arrangements) right now. It is important information one needs to deal with when a loved one is in the process of dying though.

The last part of Peaceful Passages is Kim's diary account of her mother's last few months. It's very sad and touching, and Kim handled it well. I hope I can handle my mother's eventual passing that well.

I give this book 5 stars. I thought enough of this book to give it to a friend. Julie's mother is dying of cancer and has stopped all treatment. Her mother has not contacted hospice yet, but Julie knows it will be in her mother's future. The family has a lot of difficult decisions to make and I believe this book will help.

About the Author:

Kim West holds a PhD in Clinical Pastoral Counseling and a Master of Divinity in Counseling and Family, but when her own mother became ill with terminal cancer she found that she had no hands-on knowledge of how to take care of her.
As a counselor she knew to journal her own experience to help her process her grief at losing her mother and she knew how to help her mother finish her life well and be prepared for the life to come. But the day-to-day of taking care of her mother as she died would require learning a whole new set of caring skills. And learn she did.
After completing her own journey with her mother she knew she had to help others who would travel this same path. Peaceful Passage is a merging of her years of counseling experience and the new skills she learned caring for her mother combined with her heart to help and to heal. (Thank you Connie for the Author portion).
I was given a copy of Peaceful Passages to read and review by Christian Women's Affiliates. The views and opinions are all my own.

Book Review: Rosie and Scamper

From the back of the book:
While learning to ride at Sonrise Stable, eight-year-old Rosie dreams of the horse shows she will win with her pony, Jet. Two years later, nothing is exactly the way Rosie planned it -- she's riding a new pony, Scamper, and learning that life isn't always easy. But it's as Rosie reaches out to the new girl next door that she truly begins to see that God works all things together for good in our lives.
Rosie and Scamper is the first book in the Sonrise Stable series, heartwarming stories of an extended homeschooling family, they live, learn, and love together. Mixing adventures, life lessons, and realistic horse experiences, the series is a must for readers who enjoy family values, Christian faith, and, of course, horses!
Sonrise Stable Rosie and Scamper horse book for children

This chapter book is quite cute for ages 6-9, though it's definitely more for girls than boys. Rosie learns a lot of lessons about horses and horse care over the course of the 134 pages, but the more important lessons she learns are about love, loss, and friendship. Family plays a very important roll in the book, and it's great to see the interactions between the grand kids and the grandmother. I love the name Sonrise Stables, but I'll let you read the book to get the full meaning.
The only negative for me was all the time spans that the book skips. Rosie and Scamper takes place over more than a 2 year time frame but there are a lot of 'time skips.' I understand the two years later one, but all the little 'weeks later' or 'three months later' makes the book a little disjointed. I would have liked to see more chapters and less time skips.
Overall, I'd give the book 4 stars. Any little girl that loves horses will love this book.

Book Review: Vanished by Barbara Derksen

I am a member of the CWA review Crew. The CWA Review Crew is a network of Christian Women that were brought together to review new books, ebooks, products, apps, or resources. I was given an ecopy of Vanished to read and review. The opinions are all my own.
A synopsis of Vanished from Amazon:
Vanished! That’s what Andrea Wilton and Brian Strait discover when they come to visit their best friends one evening. Where could they be and does God answer prayers, two questions they find the answers to as they journey to another world of voodoo, murder, and more missing people. Andrea and Brian also discover each other as they learn to scuba, fight a common enemy, and search for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1330409310l/12562970.jpg
Book Details:
Paperback: 340 pages
Publisher: CreateSpace (April 19, 2012)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 146809419X
ISBN-13: 978-1468094190
Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 5.5 x 0.8 inches

Vanished is the first book in the series of 'mysteries' starring Andrea Wilton and Brian Strait. This particular book is a little bit mystery and a little bit thriller. I was not surprised or shocked by anything that happened in the book, though some readers may be surprised. Andrea and Brian are enjoyable characters that I think anyone can relate to. They do make some mistakes, but they mean well. The banter back and forth is amusing and definitely something I would engage in with my friends. I realize I'm not saying a lot about the plot or what happens, but I don't want to give anything away.
The only thing that I just can't get out of my mind is the SCUBA diving. The little details drove me nuts, because some of them were wrong. I've been a certified diver for over 25 yrs and not once have I heard a driver call fins "flippers," for example. None of these details would be picked up on by the average person, and I know it shouldn't bug me, but it does.
Overall, I'd give this book 4 1/2 stars (out of 5). I'm interested and invested enough in the characters that I've already read the second book in the series.

Book Review: Veil of Pearls by MaryLu Tyndall

I was fortunate to receive a copy of MaryLu's new Christian Historical Fiction book Veil of Pearls. About the book, from her website:
It is 1811, and the prosperous port city of Charleston is bustling with immigrants like Adalia. But she has a secret: her light skin belies that she is part black and a runaway slave from Barbados. She lives in terror that her owner will come looking for her. Instead Morgan, the son of a plantation owner, finds her. He is handsome, charming, bored—and enamored of the beautiful Adalia. Soon she is swept into his glamorous world, a world in which the truth about Adalia’s heritage would ruin her—and Morgan. This epic romance reveals the beauty and tragedy of the Old South.

From the first page, I was swept away to the 1800's and living through Adalia. Though her life after escaping slavery is still rough (can you say corsets and NO INDOOR PLUMBING), I wanted to be right with Adalia in Charleston. She is plucky and not afraid to stand up to the spoiled rich brothers. Morgan becomes enthralled with Adalia and pulls her in to his world of privilege and luxury. I, like Adalia, would not be comfortable in that world, but I'd also probably love to be doted on and spoiled by Morgan. Being a part of the 'in' crowd would be nice...at least for a while.
I don't want to give anything away, but I'll say that I was so captivated by the story that I was up until after 3 am reading. I just wanted to know what was going to happen. The nastiness of certain other characters made me want to seek some revenge....nothing too drastic though.....just highly embarrass someone.... I know, I know...not very Christian of me, but geez, a person can only take so much...LOL.
I'm very glad that MaryLu Tyndall decided to put in an epilogue, though it probably means no sequel. I like to know the future of the characters....and see if what I want to happen, happens.
Overall, I give this book 5 stars. If you like Christian Historical Fiction, you'll love this book.

The Christian Olympics -- Fun and FREE!

Image

I'd like to tell you all about the week-long Christian Olympics beta testing group I just finished. It's by the Christian organization “Love, Life, Wellness“ which is owned by Certified Wellness Coach, Elizabeth Avelar. It plays through a free site called Mindbloom.

What is the Christian Olympics, you ask?  Well, the Christian Olympics is a free, two-week long on-line Special Event taking place July 26- Aug 8Th. Each day, you’re given different tasks to complete that will help you grown physically, spiritually, and/or emotionally, You are encouraged to make improvements are in 3 main areas: NUTRITION, RELATIONSHIPS and FAITH, and Coach Liz is there every step of the way. She is encouraging and also answers any questions you may have.

Now, remember this is completely FREE (No, they are NOT selling anything). The Christian Olympics Game will explain itself, as you join and follow the given directions. It is a highly interactive! Just like in the regular Olympics,  you can earn the bronze, silver, or gold by completing the various levels. I found it to be a lot of fun, though I did have to go out of my comfort zone a few times. I also made some friends that I will stay in touch with via Facebook.

You can also win prizes during this special event! I've been told there will be other surprises throughout the 2 weeks...including the 'opening ceremonies.'

If you need more details, just click here and Coach Liz will tell you all about it herself!

Bzz Review: Dr.Scholl's Massaging Gel Insoles

As a bzzagent, I get to try and review products through what is called a bzz campaign. The opinions are strictly my own.
One of my campaigns is for Dr. Scholl's Massaging Gel Insoles. I was so excited to get a pair in the mail. I knew exactly what shoes I would put my Dr. Scholl's Insoles in....my old Vasque shoes.
From the Website:
Whether you're on your feet all day for work, or your feet are simply the innocent victims of a busy lifestyle, you have plenty of reasons to try Dr. Scholl's® Massaging GelTM Insoles. For starters, these ingenious insoles:
  • Double the comfort in your shoes (for people with foot discomfort)
  • Feature a Dual Wave Design™ — soft blue gel cushions and provides superior shock absorption, while firmer purple gel offers added support
  • Can be used in a variety of shoes
  • Belong to a full line of Massaging GelTM foot care solutions
  • Come in men's sizes 8–13 and women's sizes 6–10
  • Sell for a suggested retail price of $12.99
  • Can be found in the foot care aisle of most drugstores, grocery stores, and discount mass retailers
  • Offer a money-back guarantee, so there's no risk in trying them!
It was so easy to cut down the Dr. Scholl's Inserts to fit my shoes. There are markings on the back of the insoles for sizes, and honestly, I didn't have to cut them down very much. Yes, I have big feet....and yes, my shoes are well worn.
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d397/d402/d747/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
I was pleasantly surprised by the Dr. Scholl's Massaging Gel Insoles. They are very comfortable and gave new life to my old shoes. I don't know if I'd call them massaging, but after wearing my shoes all day, my feet didn't hurt a bit. I did have to loosen the laces a little bit since the Insoles add a little height.
After trying the Dr. Scholl's Massaging Gel Insoles for almost 30 days, I've concluded I'm keeping them in the shoes. I do like them and would buy them, especially since they do have a money back guarantee. I don't think new shoes would need them, but as your shoes start to wear out, the Gel Insoles make the shoes more comfortable.
Next time I'd like to try the firmer purple gel (versus the softer blue).

What Are We Celebrating Today - Sat, June 30, 2012?

Angela will be home later this afternoon. I hope she had a lot of fun, but not too much fun. LOL.

There really isn't much being celebrated today. I guess that's good, as the heat here is just terrible. I don't feel like celebrating anything, and I can't believe June is over. Angela will start school in about 4 weeks.

1). Leap Second Time Adjustment Day: A leap second can be added, or subtracted, twice a year to keep time in sync with the atomic clock time. This is one of the two days...the other is Jan 31st. Some years scientists have to add or subtract a second and some years nothing needs to be added.

2). Meteor Watch Day: This holiday is a time to look to the skies for meteor showers. Will you be lucky enough to see meteors streaking across the night sky? Hopefully your night will be clear so you can, though the best annual show is the Perseid Meteor shower each August.
Have a great Saturday and stay cool.

Bzz Review: Mozaik -- The NEW Plasticware

As a Bzz Agent, I've been given the opportunity to review different products, and these opinions are all my own.
I was sent a service of 8 box, which is a 40 piece set of Mozaik Plasticware. This service for 8 costs about $10 in the store, and is well worth the price. I was also sent a small box of serving forks, which didn't make it to the party itself. The teenage girls saw them and promptly confiscated them. I should have gotten a photo of the girls eating with them.

From their website: Sabert® is proud to introduce a fashionable new line of heavyweight plastic partyware. Available in Classic and Contemporary styles, Mozaïk® may look like the real thing, but it’s durable, affordable plasticware that you can wash and reuse, or simply dispose. Either way, it’s a great way to serve with a little more style.
Oh wow, this product is wonderful!!! The plates are very sturdy and easy to rewash and reuse, which we did. This is the first time I didn't break a fork while using plastic cutlery. Now I asked the guys to let me take a few photos of them using the Mozaik, and they promptly had to play with their food.
The photos were taken at JB's after graduation party last weekend. I'll refrain from putting up all the graduation photos I took that day.
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d21/d395/d747/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d22/d395/d747/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
Yes, JB is making a car out of his food. That's what I get for asking to take photos.
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d23/d395/d747/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
Oh, I think this one is my husband's plate....see what I put up with?
I give the Mozaik 5 stars. It's the nicest and sturdiest disposable plates and cutlery I've ever used. Ed and Mary both commented that the plates looked like the real thing, and until Ed actually picked up a fork, he thought it was metal. You can really pile a lot of food on the big size plates without any issues...no bending, breaking, or soaking though.
Since the package said the pieces were reusable, we decided to wash the plates. That worked very well, and now they can be used again. The designs didn't wear off and the plates look as good as new.
I'll definitely be finding some of the Mozaik 8 Piece Sets for my next outdoor party and I may even take them camping since they are disposable.
Check out the website for all the other products in the Mozaik line. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Book Review: Crossing Values by Carrie Daws

Crossing Values is the first book by author Carrie Daws. It also the first book in a series, with Ryan's Crossing being the next book. I don't have a publish date for it though.
From the back of the book: For years, Amber traipsed around the northwest avoiding the skeletons in her closet. Job-hopping every few weeks, she refused to let anyone get close to her.
As winter plants itself firmly across the Rockies, she takes a chance on a job at a logging company with a family different from any she’s ever known.
Watching the family interact creates more questions than answers for Amber. Feeling like she’s entered the happily-ever-after written at the end of fairytales, she watches for cracks in the façade.
Surely as the days pass, the play-acting will cease and the real family will emerge.
Or could she be wrong? Could they truly be genuine?
Could Faye understand the trauma from her past or Peter think of her as more than just the winter office help? Could this family really hold the key to what she’s seeking?
Crossing Values by Carrie Daws
Crossing Values is only 160 pages long, so it was easy for me to read in an evening. I really wanted to love this book, as the premise sounded so good. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I knew this was a Christian fiction book (obviously, since I obtained the book from CWA), but it crossed that fine line in to being preachy. Preachy is a turn off for me, as it is for quite a few other readers of Christian Fiction. I expect that Carrie will grow as a writer and fix this issue, as Crossing Values is her first book.
Another issue that stands out for me is the lack of kissing, especially following the marriage proposal. Couples that get engaged kiss (even Amish kiss), and it's almost like sealing the proposal. I don't want graphic or anything, but there should be some mention of a kiss or two. And no, I don't know why that bothers me so much.
Now the banter between extended family members flows well and is so enjoyable. It reminds me a lot of my mother's side of the family. The feeling of love and hope come through and made me wish I was right there at the table eating with the family.
There is nothing objectionable in the book, so it's appropriate for all ages. I can't seen teenagers reading and enjoying it though. The list price $11.99, but it's a little cheaper on Amazon right now.
Overall, I'd give the book 3 1/2 stars.

As a member of the CWA Review Crew, I was given a copy of the book Crossing Values by Carrie Daws to read and review. The opinions are my own.

My 10 Grilling Tips....

SocialMoms and Applegate have come together to have me promote Applegate Hot Dogs, which are now available in the Atlanta area, both at Kroger and Whole Foods. Applegate Hot Dogs are nitrate and nitrite free and actually come in at least 9 different varieties ranging from Organic Turkey Dogs to Super Natural Beef Hot Dogs. http://www.applegatefarms.com/hotdogs_sausage.aspx

Did you know that eighty percent of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used in animal agriculture? The vast majority are used for non-therapeutic purposes, such as promoting animal growth and compensating for the effects of unsanitary and overcrowded conditions. Applegate makes sure their animals are never given antibiotics, hormones or artificial growth promotants. Their products are made with natural and organic ingredients, and best of all, they are gluten and casein free. I just recently found out that I have to be gluten free, so Applegate  ( www.applegatefarms.com) products may become a staple in my household.
With summer and the warm weather comes grilling season. My family happens to be year around grillers, with at least one meal being grilled a week. I actually do most of the grilling at my house, not my husband, and over the years, I've made my share of mistakes.
10 Important Grilling Tips.....
1). NEVER use gasoline as lighter fluid or squirt gasoline into your grill. It's just plain dangerous! Not only could it explode and hurt someone, but think of all the carcinogens you could end up putting on your food. And no, I've NEVER done this.
2). Bring your meat to room temperature before putting on the grill. I know it sounds a little odd, but having the meat at room temperature will help cook it evenly on the grill.
3). Make sure your grill is in a safe area, away from the house and dry materials. I know that sounds like common sense, but you'd be surprised how many people every years start their house on fire from their grill.
4). NEVER light a grill in the house or in a tent. I know that sounds like common sense, but people do it. Not only is it a fire hazard, but when gas/charcoal burn, the result is the release of carbon dioxide (and other things) in to the air. When there isn't enough oxygen for complete combustion, carbon monoxide is the result. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless gas that will suffocate you, since it strongly binds with the iron in the hemoglobin in your blood. Even a small exposure to carbon monoxide can have lasting results. Hmm, can't tell my husband and I are chemists, huh?
5). Don't leave a lit grill unattended, especially if there are children around.  I know there are times when you need to run inside for something, but it only takes a few seconds for a child to touch a hot grill. In this age of cell phones, it's just safer to call in to the house and have someone else bring out what you need.
6). Clean the grate of your grill after every use...and preferably while it's still hot. It's much easier to clean hot. A decent grill brush isn't very expensive, and keeping the grate clean will make the taste of your food so much better.
7). Use Tongs and never pierce your meat. When you grill, you want the juices to be locked in. Every time you put a hole in your meat, the juices escape. The result will be dried out meat. Yuck!
8). Preheat your grill and get it HOT. When you put your meat on the grill, you want it to sear and lock in all the juices. If you put meat on too early, the meat will just dry out.
9). Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the food. I know most of us just look to see if meat is done, but the smart thing to do is stick that thermometer in the meat. Make sure it is done, especially with ground meat, as ground meat tends to harbor more bacteria. Trust me, you don't want to get sick.
10). Avoid flair ups and have a water bottle on hand. Fat from burgers, steaks, etc will cause flair ups and using a teaspoon of baking soda in your water bottle can help control them. You want your food cooked, not turned in to charcoal. By that means, use seasonings, but not ones with a lot of sugar. Sugar is another carbon based molecule and will not only attract the flames, but burn. BBQ sauce has a lot of sugar and should be put on only at the end of cooking.

I hope my tips help you to have a wonderful and safe grilling season. If you have any more, please feel free to leave them below. Thanks you SocialMoms and Applegate for this opportunity. I wrote this blog post while participating in the SocialMoms and Applegate blogging program, to earn My SocialMoms Rewards Points. The opinions and ideas expressed here are my own. http://applegate.socialmoms.com/

Getting Ready for a McCormick Grill Mates Party....

I was lucky enough to have been chosen as a McCormick Grill Mates Grill Ambassador through the Crowdtap site. A variety of McCormick Grill Mates Products was sent to me to use. Since a friend's son was graduating high school, we decided this would be a great time to have a party (especially after our original grill out party was cancelled due to excessive rain).
The first thing we tried out was the McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning on steaks. These were Chuck eyes, as the steaks taste and act a lot like rib eyes but for much less. The other side of the steak had a lot more seasoning on it.
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d806/d387/d747/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
Now I used the McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak seasoning on some hamburgers and the Molasses Bacon seasoning on others.
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d805/d387/d747/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
These Molasses Bacon burgers were quite good. My husband and the other guys like the Montreal Spicy Steak Season on their burgers better though....but I think it's just a guy thing. My neighbor Dawn is sold on the Montreal Steak Seasoning, since it's so versatile.
I also did make a slab of ribs with the Memphis Pit BBQ Rub. That was a little messy, as I rubbed the dry mix into the ribs with my hands...ohhhh, orange hands. The ribs must have been very good, as I only got 1 bite....yes, not even a full rib....just one stinkin' bite. The Brown Sugar Bourbon BBQ Sauce was available for dipping the ribs. Oh, the BBQ sauce is good, as it has such a nice sweet smoky flavor.
Mary finally made the decision to have BBQ Pork, since we weren't sure how many of the people invited to JB's graduation party would show up. BBQ pork can be made ahead of time in a larger quantity, and she was also worried about rain. The Brown Sugar Bourbon BBQ Sauce makes a great sauce for both the BBQ pork and to put in the baked beans.
The actual party was last weekend....and hopefully I'll get a chance to post some photos. The food was great and the cake was gorgeous.
Thank you Crowdtap and McCormick!

What Are We Celebrating Today - Sun, June 17, 2012?

First I'd like to wish all the men out there a very Happy Father's Day!! I will be calling my father later today. I already texted both my brothers. Many countries actually celebrate this holiday on the third Sunday in June.
So, we are celebrating....
1). Work at Home Father's Day: Today we celebrate those fathers that work from home or are stay at home dads. That number is getting bigger every year, as dads decide to spend more time at home. This is rare that both this holiday and Father's Day fall on the same day. This is also called Husband Caregiver day
2). Eat Your Veggies Day: Yes, this is almost in the middle of fruit and veggies month. This holiday is the perfect opportunity to re-introduce a healthy portion of vegetables into your diet. Now I don't mind some veggies, while there are one or two I just can't stand....and a few I'm allergic to.
3). Stewart's Root Beer Day: I like this one! Stewart's Root Beer was introduced way back in 1924 at a humble drink stand. Today, it's a national brand with a cult following that's been enjoying new and original flavors for over 75 years. I think it only comes in the brown bottles (and as a fountain drink), so it makes the kids feel so grown up. Personally, I grew up with A&W.
Well, I'm going to try and get at least a little sleep. This no sleeping thing is going to kill me.

Angela's Production Dance Number

Okay...I finally have our dance studio's production number to show you. I know you won't be able to pick out Angela, as it goes too fast and there are too many dancers. Just trust me, she's in there. She does NOT have the boot on either (Ang is not in to hip-hop).

Production
I hope you enjoy it.

What are we Celebrating today -- 6/2/2012?

Angela and I were gone most of the day, as we went to see the premier of Madagascar 3 in 3D at the Mall of Georgia. I didn't realize that mall was so far away. It took us over an hour to get there.
Okay, so today we are celebrating....
1). National Bubba Day: This holiday honors anyone named or called Bubba. To qualify to be honored today, your name can be formally, or informally "Bubba", and actually, you can even take on the name "Bubba" for just the day. That way everyone can celebrate this day. Right, Bubba?
2). Yell "Fudge" At Cobras in North America Day: Huh? Now according to to what I found on the web: "In order to keep poisonous cobra snakes out of North America, all citizens are asked to go outdoors at noon local time and yell “fudge!” Fudge makes cobras gag, and the mere mention of it makes them skeedaddle."  Um, no....I don't get it. It sounds like an Indiana Jones thing to me, but I could be wrong.

3). Leave the Office Early Day: Yes, today is the day to sneak out a few minutes early and enjoy the day. This holiday encourages you to take some time out from the desk to realize that rest, relaxation and getting away can actually improve morale, attitude and productivity. Too bad this one falls on a Saturday this year.
4). Chimborazo Day: Do you know which mountain pokes out furthest into space? No, it’s not Mount Everest, but it's Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador. It has to do with local and not height of the mountain, exactly. I can explain it if you want...but most of you probably don't care. This is the day to celebrate that mountain though.
I hope all of you are having a great day. The next 4 days are going to be so busy here, so I won't be around much.

Book Review: The Adventures of Quinn Higgins: Boy Detective--The Case of Blackbeard's Treasure

The Adventures of Quinn Higgins: Boy Detective--The Case of Blackbeard's Treasure by Douglas Quinn is the 4th book in the Quinn Higgins series. From the back cover:
When his dad takes Quinn to visit his Aunt Kim and cousin Summer McPhee at Ocracoke Village on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, little does Quinn realize the adventure awaiting them.
Once there, Quinn discovers that his Aunt Kim is unable to pay the mortgage and is about to lose her home. Soon, Quinn and Summer come up with a crazy idea. If they can find the buried treasure of the infamous pirate known as Blackbeard, which is supposed to be buried somewhere on Ocracoke Island, they can save the house.
There are two big problems. Treasure hunters have been looking for Blackbeard’s treasure for over three hundred years and still haven’t found it.
The second problem is a man named Pegleg Peterson, who claims to be a descendant of one of Blackbeard’s crew, and who has been looking for the treasure all his life. Pegleg Peterson is not a nice man and doesn’t appreciate any competition, especially from kids.
Will Quinn and Summer find the buried treasure before Pegleg Peterson? Or is the treasure lost forever, never to be found?

This book is a wonderful chapter book for ages 6-9 and good for both boys and girls. Quinn Higgins is the kind of kid the reader really wants as a friend, as the adventures he has are what every kids dreams of.....pirates, bigfoot, haunted houses, etc. This particular book actually introduces the reader to Summer McPhee, who is about to have her own series of books.
So, if you're looking for a chapter book for an elementary schooler, pick up one of the Quinn Higgins, Boy Detective series. My nephew actually has my copy of one of the other books in the Quinn Higgins series, and Everett has decided that he's keeping it....and Everett isn't much of a reader either.

What Are We Celebrating Today ---5/17/2012?

Oh, I itch tonight, and I don't even know why. I must have eaten something I'm allergic to, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what it is. I've looked over everything I had for dinner.
So, today we are celebrating.....
1). Flower Moon: A Native American celebration of the full moon in May. It’s name references the blooming of springtime flowers in May. When you go out tonight to celebrate the full moon, be ware of werewolves.....LOL...and yes, I know tonight isn't a full moom.
2). Pack Rat Day: Yes, finally a day for me!!I'm a pack rat and I come from a long line of pack rats...LOL My biggest vice is books....I love books, as I love to read. I do try to give some away, but boy it's difficult sometimes. Apparently, a lot of us are pack rats to a certain extent....so celebrate it today!
3). World Hypertension Day: Every year, 17th May is dedicated to World Hypertension Day (WHD). This is an initiative of the World Hypertension League (WHL) to promote public awareness of hypertension worldwide. If you'd like to know more: http://www.ish-world.com/default.aspx?Home
4). World Information Day: This use to be called World Telecommunications Day....The main objective of the day is to raise global awareness of societal changes brought about by the Internet and new technologies. Oh yes....new technology...it changes daily it seems.
I hope all of you had a great day.

I Am An Addict....

I guess the first step is admitting you have a problem. Well, I'm an addict. I've been an addict for years and years. I don't think most people know of my addiction, apart from Connie C. and my family.....maybe a few other people suspect.
Well, I'm 'volunteering' again next week and the week after, so I can feed my addiction. You see, if I 'volunteer' I earn $10 credit an hour, and boy can I use that credit. I had an $85 voucher last week, and with coupons and discounts, I ended up with about $200 worth of merchandise. It was great! I had Angela with me for the shopping. She only bought a couple of items, which really surprised me. They didn't have the few items she was looking for though.
The credit I earn this week is mostly going for gifts. Having 10 nieces and nephews means lots of birthdays and lots of Christmas presents. I also want to pick up some special items for my soccer kids. Though, I think there are a few items I would like.
Ah, I guess if I have to have an addiction, this is the one to have. I'm really not hurting anyone. My husband would beg to differ I bet...he HATES my addiction. But, he just doesn't understand. My kids get it. They are almost as addicted as I am. And I do come by this addiction honestly, as my mother started it and fed it throughout my childhood.
Ah, I feel so much better getting this off my chest. Being a reading and book addict is hard....thank goodness many of you will understand. I bet even one or two of you are addicts yourself. I'm sure Connie C is too.... Thank goodness Scholastic books needs me to help out a few days. It not only gives me book credit, but a change to look over all of the books. I have a box with my name on it that I am slowly filling with books I want.

Happy Thursday May 10th

Ah, I'm finally able to get on the computer today....I've been 'volunteering' at the Scholastic Book Warehouse. I'll be there 5 more days over the next couple of weeks, including tomorrow. By volunteering and helping out, I get  book credit....and one can never have to much money in book credit. LOL
It seems to be a very light holiday day....
1). Lupus Day: The month of May marks Lupus Awareness Month in the United States. In order to bring together a variety of awareness programs, World Lupus Day was started in 2004 to coincide with the 7th International Congress on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Related Conditions. Today is the day that marks World Lupus Day. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system thinks that every thing in your body is something to be destroyed. People with lupus have an overactive immune system.
2). Confederate Memorial Day: This holiday is celebrated in both North Carolina and South Carolina. This day was chosen since it's both the anniversary of the death of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (1863) and the capture of Confederate president Jefferson Davis  (1865).
Have a good Thursday!

Today -- May 9th, 2012

I never did get yesterday's posted....I would say I got too busy, but that wasn't it exactly. Let's just say things didn't quite work out as planned.
1). Lost Sock Memorial Day: Oh, I love this one!!!! THis holiday recognizes your drawer full of unmatched socks, and each unmatched sock represents a missing sock. I never throw away our unmatched socks, because it may show up someday. And with Angela, we have a TON of unmatched socks.....oh my goodness. Someday soon I need to sit down with the basket of unmatched socks and see what I have....and what I can match up.
2). Accounting Day: The first Accounting Day was believed to be held in 1972. It's believed by some that the San Diego Chapter of the California Society of CPA's organized the event to interest young people in pursuing an accounting career. The purpose of Accounting Day is to promote the accounting profession, to provide an opportunity for networking among accountants in public practice, industry, and government, and to provide quality continuing education for attendees.
3). Mother's At The Wall Day: The Mother's Day at The Wall ceremony is an important event for the nation and the families of our veterans. The ceremony allows us to remember and honor those who have given their lives to our nation's defense as well as recognize the sacrifices of the loved ones — in particular the mothers — they left behind. I do believe that we sometimes forget that there are a lot of loved ones left behind when our military personal goes off to serve. Those left behind need our love and support also. One year when my brother had to go overseas, we had my neice come live with us for that time.....it was an experience, as Rebecca was 2 and Angela was 3.
This time I'm getting it posted early. LOL. I hope you enjoy your hump day.
