TGIF, except I have to work tomorrow. I'm a little nervous about it, as it's been a while since I've coached.
I can get in to some of today's holidays, as it is National Chip and Dip Day. National Chip and Dip Day celebrates America's favorite snack duet. If you re holding a party, it is almost certain that chips and dips are on the snack list. Since it doesn't specify what kind of chips or what kind of dip...take your pick. I would think Tortilla chips and salsa would count.
I vaguely remember this date: March 23, 1989....do you? It's the date that gives us our next holiday: Near Miss Day. It commemorates the day a huge Asteroid nearly missed hitting the earth. An asteroid the size of a mountain, came within 500,000 miles of a collision with Earth. In interstellar terms, it was a near miss. Had it collided with the Earth, it would have left a devastating crater the size of Washington, D.C., and it's affect on the planet would have been catastrophic. Hey, I guess this is a reason to celebrate....LOL.
Oh, for you pet lovers, it's National Puppy Day. (and before I get asked, NO, I don't know when kitty day is). This holiday even has a website. http://www.nationalpuppyday.com/index2.htm This holiday is to celebrate the magic and unconditional love that puppies bring to our lives. But more importantly, it's a day to help save orphaned puppies across the globe and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills, as well as further our mission for a nation of puppy-free pet stores. There are so many dogs and puppies that are waiting for a good home. Lily was a puppy when we got her....she and her littermates had been dumped on a highway. Maggie was a severely abused and beaten (and dragged by a car) young dog when we adopted her. The cruelty of people never ceases to amaze me....but I digress..... Yes, we will be adopting another dog at some point, as Lily needs a companion.
And lastly, it's Kick Butts Day. No, this isn't related to Chuck Norris....it's the day for youth to STAND OUT ... SPEAK UP ... and SEIZE CONTROL AGAINST BIG TOBACCO. http://www.kickbuttsday.org/ You can go to the official website and click on a map to find events and activities going on in your area.
I hope all of you have a great weekend. Hopefully, the pollen count will stay down a little after last night's storms.

Monday 3 19-2012
It's been a long, sad weekend and I hate to say it, but I'm glad Monday is here. Unfortunately, the pollen count here in Georgia is well over 3000 last I looked...and 100 is considered high. Ick. I am having all sorts of allergy issues.
1). National Quilting Day: This holiday celebrates fabulous quilts and those who make them. My mother is a quilter.... The National Quilting Association started National Quilting Day in 1991. Their members passed a resolution at the 22nd Annual Show in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 1991.
2). Poultry Day: Guess this holiday is for the birds! Sorry, I just had to say it. LOL. This holiday celebrates chicken, turkey and other birds we commonly consume. Chicken and turkey are lower in fats, and cholesterol than other meats, making it better for your health, and they also give you your breakfast eggs. So, have some turkey or chicken for lunch or dinner.
3). National Corndog Day: http://www.corndogday.com Yes, this holiday actually has its own website. You can enjoy your corndog and watch basketball all day. For those of you that don't know what a is, you're missing out. It's a hot dog coated in cornmeal batter and deep fried in oil, although some are baked, and almost all corn dogs are served on wooden sticks. My kids loved having them as a special dinner treat.
4). National Chocolate Carmel Day: Yum! Now this is my kind of holiday. It's a day to celebrate everything great about chocolate and caramel. So have yourself a Milky Way today.
5). Operation Iraqi Freedom Day: Back on this date in 2003, President Bush came on live TV to anounce that Operation Iraqi Freedom had begun. Please just remember all our brave men and women that are serving in the military.
Maybe I'll fix corndogs for dinner....and I'm definitely going to get me a Milky Way. Chocolate fixes a lot of things. LOL Have a good day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I'm sorry I haven't posted the last few days. Things at my house have been a nightmare the last few days. I am hoping it will get better soon.
A very Happy St. Patrick's Day to all my friends. Saint Patrick's day is in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland, who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isles, as Ireland is known. It is truly a day of celebrating Irish history, ancestry, traditions and customs.....and green beer. LOL.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the rain fall softly upon your fields. And the sun shine warm upon your face.
Top of the mornin' to you.....(and the rest of the day to 'me self!)
May there always be work for you to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine on your windowpane.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
This Author's favorite:
May the wind at your back not be from the cabbage and corned beef that you eat today!
Everyone's at least a little bit Irish on St. Patrick's Day. (how true, how true).
Another holiday being celebrated today is Campfire Girls Day. It was founded on March 17, 1910, in Thetford, Vermont, by Luther Gulick M.D. and his wife Charlotte Vedder Gulick. Camp Fire Girls, as it was known at the time, was created as the sister organization to the Boy Scouts of America. The organization changed its name in 1975 to Camp Fire Boys and Girls when membership eligibility was expanded to include boys. In 2001, the current name, Camp Fire USA, was adopted. I was a Campfire Girl. I went from Brownies to Girl Scouts to Campfire Girls. Campfire Girls was a lot more fun than Girl Scouts, and a lot more outdoorsy. I remember my mom going with us winter camping....and there was a ton of snow on the ground. We had to shovel around the door of the pit toilets before we could get in....then we discovered mice had taken up residence. We had to remove them before using the facilities. LOL I also remember taking my Red Cross First Aid Test in 7th grade, so I could be First Responder certified.
Lastly, it's Ta'anit Esther Day. No, I had no clue what that meant. It means the Fast of Esther, which remembers God's deliverance of the Jewish people from the evil of Haman during the reign of King Xerxes. Esther and the Jews fasted for 3 days before Esther went to the king to appeal for the deliverance of the Jews.
I hope everyone has a good St. Paddy's Day, with lots of food and green beer. I think I'll see if Mike will take us out to dinner...but he won't want to leave Lily that long (sigh).

March 10, 2012 Celebrations
It's a long weekend, as Mike kicked the vacuum last night and probably broke his toe. He won't go in and have it looked at, though I think he should. I couldn't even get him to put some ice on it. So, what is today.....
It is The International Day of Awesomeness. I like this one. This holiday is a celebration of awesomeness. People are awesome every day, frequently don't realize it, and their feats of awesomeness are rarely recognized. This is a special day to both perform and celebrate feats of awesomeness, so BE AWESOME today. This holiday occurs on March 10th, because that's Chuck Norris' birthday. No offense to Mr. Norris, but this isn't really a salute to Chuck Norris, the man. This is a tribute to the awesomeness of the the myth of Chuck Norris. Hmm...interesting.
Did you notice that March 10th abbreviated is Mar 10.....or Mario....so it's Mario Day. Mario, the Italian plumber, was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, and first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981. Mario then moved up in the gaming world and got his own game in which he shared the spot light with his brother Luigi. Mario can typically be seen fighting Bowser to rescue Princess Peach.Mario even has a live action movie...The Mario Brothers...and it's quite entertaining. I enjoyed it, especially the Walk The Dinosaur song. Mario is known as being the most famous video game character ever created. The Mario game series has been the best selling series of all time—over 200 million copies sold. I know I've played a few of the games over the last um, 20 years.
World Kidney Day is also celebrated today. There is a whole website dedicated to this holiday, and I think you should check it out. http://www.worldkidneyday.org/ The mission of World Kidney Day is to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.
Today is Name Tag Day, those ubiquitous little stickers found on the lapels of strangers and conventioneers everywhere. Celebrate this day by wearing your very own name tag. I think I can skip this one, though there are days I need a name tag so I can remember my own name. LOL
Researching one holiday usually leads to the discovery of another that is being celebrated on the same day. This is the case for Harriet Tubman Day. I found it accidently, and it is an official holiday. Harriet Tubman Day, 1990 March 10th, I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. 1990 President George Bush. Proclamation 6107 - Harriet Tubman day is celebrated on the anniversary of her death (March 10, 1913), not her birth. I figure this is due to the fact that we don't know when exactly she was born. Records really weren't kept on slave births.
I may have missed a holiday today....and if I did, go ahead and post it below. Sometimes it's difficult to confirm that something odd is truely being celebrated on a particular day. So put on your name tag, read about Harriet Tubman, take good care of your kidneys, and most importantly, be awesome today.

What are we Celebrating Today -- March 8, 2012?
I do wish things here weren't so busy. Mike is working so many more hours now and for less pay. I was hoping to hear back from a place for a part time job. The guy emailed me and said he'd call. He still hasn't called. I'm not sure what I should do there.
Oh, finally....a holiday about how I feel right now. It's Be Nasty Day. Okay, I guess I should say that I hope people decide NOT to celebrate this day. But if you do choose to celebrate Be Nasty Day, then celebrate by refreshing yourself on some of the greatest insults ever uttered in film, television, politics, and literature. That way you aren't being nasty...but you get a dose of nasty.
It is also International Women's Day sponsored worldwide by the United Nations. The roots of this celebration goes back to the late 1800's to early 1900s. It grew from women's socialist movements and early women's trade union groups. The first International Women's Day was held March 19, 1911. The focus of this holiday is upon women workers, and advancing women's rights in the workforce, politics, and society.
March 8 is also Girls Write Now Day, or think of it as, Girls Write Everywhere Day. It is a day to encourage girls of all ages everywhere in the world to put pen to paper and explore the beauty and power of their unique, creative voices. It is a day to celebrate girls, girl writers, and overall girl awesomeness. I will make sure my daughter knows about this holiday.
I think I'll go celebrate Be Nasty Day with the insurance company. LOL. They are not paying some items that should be paid. Boy I hate owing money, to anyone.
